Jane wrote six completed novels and books, and two that were not completed at the time of her death, she also wrote several short stories and there are copies of her letters. The Jane Austen novels are: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion and several short stories.

Catherine Morland, our author informs us, was rather unremarkable, as heroines go.  However her sweetness, naiveté and artlessness endear her easily to the reader.  Catherine, while enjoying all that Bath has to offer a young lady, meets Henry Tilney, the younger son of a very wealthy gentleman.  Catherine enjoys reading Gothic novels, and is beside herself with excitement and anticipation when she is invited to visit Henry's sister in their home, Northanger Abbey.  But will it be all she hopes or all she fears? buy Northanger Abbey

Eleanor and Marianne are devastated when their father dies, leaving his estate entailed, and they and their mother with barely enough to live on.  Eleanor falls in love with a gentleman, but values prudence highly and keeps her feelings to herself.  Marianne falls in love with a dashing young man, and believes in showing her feelings unreservedly.  Time and experience reveal to the sisters just how much sense, and how much sensibility is wise, and along with this wisdom comes a much better understanding and appreciation of each other. buy Sense and Sensibility

I was asked when I was 13 by my school librarian whether or not I had read this book.  When I answered in the negative, I was told I was a very naughty girl and to read it at once.  I did as I was told, and have not stopped reading it since.  I give the same advice to you if you have not read it. buy Pride and Prejudice

The Bertrams are a very wealthy family, and decide to offer a home to their poor young niece, Fanny Price.  Fanny grows up with a strong sense of her own insignificance beside her beautiful, talented and rich cousins, and her only feeling of worth comes from serving others in order to feel needed.  Her cousin Edmund is the only one to show her any real kindness, and he takes pains to guide her developing mind and see that she is not too badly treated.  Edmund's teaching is not without effect, and as Fanny becomes a young woman she shows great insight into people's true natures, being able to separate beauty, wealth and charm from a person's true character - wisdom which even Edmund would do well to listen to, but will not.  buy Mansfield Park

Another of my favourites.  Emma is a very amusing book, and the various characters really show Jane Austen at her perceptive best.  Emma fancies herself as a matchmaker, and spends her time, as industriously as any young woman could, by plotting and scheming to make certain young men fall in love with her sweet young friend, Harriet.  As luck would have it, however, Harriet falls in love with the very man that Emma realises she cannot live without. buy Emma

Persuasion was written when Jane was older, and her heroine, Anne Eliot, is her most mature heroine.  When Anne was younger she fell in love with the dashing Captain Wentworth, but her friends persuaded her not to go ahead with such an imprudent match.  Since then she has deeply regretted her choice, and now her family fall into difficult financial straits. Captain Wentworth returns to the area but regards Anne as little more than an acquaintance.  Anne and her family relocate to Bath, and meet the wealthy Mr. Elliot who shows considerable interest in Anne.  Will he be able to persuade Anne to forget Captain Wentworth? buy Persuasion

Jane Austen's short stories were mainly written when she was young, for family and friends.  They are amusing to read, and it is interesting to see how her genius for writing and for observing human nature developed.

Lady Susan is an amusing completed short novel.  The manipulative Lady Susan seeks to charm everyone into allowing her to live upon their generosity while mistreating her innocent daughter and scheming how to marry her off to a repulsive but rich gentleman.

Sanditon is unfinished, but worth reading nonetheless, and very amusing.  buy

The power of doing anything with quickness is always prized much by the possessor, and often without any attention to the imperfection of the performance.

Who is Tom Lefroy? (the story of Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy)

When Jane was 20, she was introduced to a law student from Ireland whose name was Tom Lefroy. Tom was the nephew of the husband of Jane's friend Anne. Jane and Tom spent some time together over the Christmas and New Year Period going to a ball together. Tom's family did not look favourably on Jane because of her family’s lack of financial standing, and the relationship did not flourish, though tradition in the Lefroy family indicates that Tom treated Jane badly. Tom Lefroy eventually became the Lord Chief Justice for Ireland and was married having seven children.

The questions everyone has are:

1. Was the relationship serious?

2. If the relationship was serious, did it have a bearing on Jane's books? After all in Jane's books her characters were in a similar situation, but for them everything turned out well.

The film 'Becoming Jane is based on this chapter of Jane's life.
