Bride and Prejudice Storyline

The Bride and Prejudice storyline follows closely the same themes that Pride and Prejudice follows. The main differences is the time period is set to the present day and instead of the location being set in England, the story has a more global feel, with characters and scenes set in India, the United Kingdom and California.

Chaman Bakshi lives in Amritsar, India, with his wife, Manorama, and four daughters Jaya (equivalent to Jane), Lalita (equivalent to Elizabeth), Maya (equivalent to Mary), and Lakhi (equivalent to Lydia). Manorama would like to get her daughters married to wealthy families so that they live comfortably. She is upset because her husband Chaman refuses to immigrate to England, when her brother wanted to sponsor them. She is pleased when she gets a proposal from the Bingley family for their son, Balraj. Balraj arrives with Caucasion friend, William Darcy, and gets to meet Jaya, and instantly likes her.

William and Balraj go to Goa with Lolita, Jaya and Lukhe to look at a hotel. Whilst in Goa Johnny Wickham, whom Lolita likes, appears on the scene. Manorama does not approve of William and Johnny, and would prefer that Lalita marry Mr Kohli from California.

The story evolves from here true to the Pride and Prejudice formulae.

The film is full of lively and thoroughly enjoyable music, which I loved to watch. My favourite song is the one about Mr Kohli saying “no life without wife”.

At the end Johnny Wickham is exposed as the untrustworthy person he is, Lalita falls in love with Will Darcy and marries him, Jaya and Mr Balraj marries, and Chandra Lumba marries Mr Kholi.
